Lifting Bridge

The path starts from this gate (which you do not need to pass through) alongside the footpath from Souldern Grounds.

The path just consists of following this field boundary down the hill to the canal.

The bridge may be up to allow boats through.

Prior to 2024 you could raise the arms to lower the bridge to walk across. The bridge is now fitted with a hydraulic system which may only be operated from the Clifton side, using a Canal lock key. Canal users are supposed to lower the bridge after using to allow pedestrian access.

You can return to Souldern  by following the Canal towpath north to Wharf Farm and back via Wharf Lane, or south past Somerton deep lock and then back via the path from Upper Souldern Grounds.
