Towpath past Somerton

This page describes the section of the Oxford Canal towpath, immediately to the south of the section described on the Canal Towpath page.


The section starts at Somerton bridge (bridge 196), which may be reached from Souldern by the Canal Towpath, Upper Souldern Grounds to Somerton or Somerton Road.

The towpath is not fenced along this stretch.

Approaching bridge 198 (Deep Cutting Bridge)


The path rises slightly to cross the track that crosses bridge 198.

Approaching Somerton Mill Bridge (199).


Bear to the right of the bridge and a small gate leads on to the road.

Turn left and follow the track up to the canal bridge.

This gate leads to an alternative footpath back to Somerton (not described here).


The footpath then follows a paved track to Somerton.


Approaching road Somerton–Heyford Road.


The end of the track on Somerton–Heyford road. From here you can turn left towards Somerton and return to Souldern via the routes listed at the start, or turn right towards Heyford and then return to Souldern via the path from Somerton Road to Heyford.
